Cabaldon and Yamada Open Their Headquarters Sunday as 8th AD Race Continues

In a stroke of irony, the campaigns of both Christopher Cabaldon and Mariko Yamada had their headquarters openings at the same time on the same day. This presented a logistical problem, graciously alleviated by the accommodation of the Yamada Campaign.

The events and indeed the very locations presented a contrast of styles of the campaigns.

For the Cabaldon campaign, it was located in Cabaldon’s hometown of West Sacramento, where he has served as Mayor for now nearly 10 years. His headquarters was packed and festive. Loaded with elected officials from both inside and outside of the district. It was a veritable who’s who of the 8th Assembly District and beyond.

Mayor Cabaldon addressed the enthusiastic crowd that was so large, it had to be moved outside of the headquarters.

“I want to say thank you for coming out today, it’s a great day and I’m sure there are lots of other things you can be doing. This is really an opportunity for us to make change in our district and in this state of California. I’m really looking forward to it.”

In his short speech, he talked about the struggles that lay ahead with a sense of hope and optimism that seems to embody the electorate these days.

“We have so many challenges in this part of California, but I also look around and see so much opportunity and so much hope and so much energy.”

For the Yamada campaign, though I missed the ribbon cutting, it was a smaller, more business-like opening ceremony. Located in Vacaville, in the middle of the Solano County area that both campaigns need to make in-roads into in order to win, Yamada moves away from her Yolo County base to reach out across the county-line to the Solano County voters. By the time I reach the headquarters, there are over 30 volunteers, hard at work, stuffing and addressing envelopes for a fundraising event next month.

Supervisor Yamada had a ribbon cutting ceremony with roughly 50 supporters on hand.

When I caught up with her, she kindly gave me a brief statement.

“Welcome to Yamada 2008. We’ve kicked off our headquarters opening here in Vacaville and looking forwarded to a spirited sprint to the finish to June 3, 2008. We’ve had food, fun and festivities, and now we’re working on a mailing party. We’re working and we’re just having a great time. Thank you for coming.”

The Vanguard will continue its coverage of the 8th Assembly and many other races that Yolo County voters will be facing in the coming June Primary Election.

  1. Wow, the Cabaldon steam roll continues! 200 supporters and video coverage on primetime Sacramento news? Looks like the writing’s on the wall.

But let me ask – was that photo of Phil Angelides on Yamada’s front door the only “elected official” to show up to her event? Wow.

  5. Now the Cabaldon team is again spinning this story as fast as it can. He has to be running scared! While Cabaldon may have had 200+ people at his event, how many will be volunteers? The fact Mariko had 30 volunteers is a sign of her grassroots campaign whil Cabaldon runs the politics as usual campaign. He’s spreading dirt about her about stuff he’s making up as he goes along! Saying about Mariko in an interview, he said, “my opponent doesn’t want to raise taxes on the rich like the yacht tax, she protects Prop 13, defends the death penalty, and attends both AIPAC and pro-Palestinian events.”
Cabaldon, stay clean and join Yamada in her clean campaign pledge!

  9. I don’t think there were 200 people at the event. More like 100-150.

But, there were a good number of volunteers from the Davis College Dems and the Sac State Democrats at the event.

  13. You gotta feel sorry for Mike McGowan – having to introduce Chris as the guy running for the Assembly from West Sacramento must really grate on him.

  17. Looked like there were 5 – not 50 or even 30 at the Yamada event.

And DPD should have picked up one of the Mariko mailers stating her support for the death penalty, interest in protecting prop 13 and stopping new taxes (even with the horrible budget cuts to education). The mailer is right there in the picture, taped to the top of a cubicle!

Cabaldon is just reading the text in Yamada’s materials that she is giving to Solano County Voters, and telling those in Davis what conservative messages she is using on the other end of the district. That’s NOT negative campaigning. That is just showing voters what his opponents stated positions are on the issues.

In fact, since Yamada was giving these mailers to volunteers this weekend she should be happy that Cabaldon is speaking about her campaign messages.

I invite Yamada to take any piece of Christopher Cabaldon’s materials and read them at a Democratic Forum. That’s fair game!

  21. As a Davis College Democrat (DCD) myself, I’d like to give a shout out to the Sac State College Dems. At the opening of the Cabaldon campaign HQ, I think there were just as many Sac State Dems as Davis College Dems and they’ve done more as a group to support Christopher than Davis College Democrats has done so far. They’ve already given an official endorsement for his campaign and thus can work as a club to support his campaign. I’m trying to get the same thing done with DCD but we have to go through a questionnaire sending/candidates forum process first. Sac State Dems deserve as much credit as the Davis College Dems do for the work they’ve put into Christopher’s campaign. My internal head count of all the college dems at the event: seven, not including recent graduates.
